Let’s journey back to the old days
Days of honor and pride
Where virginity is a treasure
And marriage,every girl’s dream
And children its reward.
Let’s travel together to the days of our fathers
Where responsibility is what makes a man
The welfare of the family, the joy of every man
Days where the cry of a baby
A sonorous song to the ears of of every man.
Let’s now wake up to reality
A world of broken calabashes
Where calabash can no longer holds water
A world that has lost its honor
Where things have fallen apart.
Join me to see a world in despair
Where water is fetched before getting to the river
A world where apple is tasted without payment
The world of ‘BABY MAMA’.
Virginity no longer a thing of pride
And marriage now a thing of choice
The fruit of marriage now an access to bank
For that is easy to manage than marriage
Welcome to the world of ‘BABY MAMA’.
Pleasure is all the men of today seek
And responsibility, not all are ready to take
The pleasurable sound of the lady, they want to hear
The cry of the seeds of their deeds, agony to their ears.
Joy of motherhood to some now an agony of motherhood
Broken are their calabashes and are beyond repair
The seeds of their deeds now a burden for them alone to bear
What a world!
The pitiful world of ‘BABY MAMA’.
Not too late to go back to the ways of the past
The broken calabash could still be pieced together
Dreams could still become a reality
And honor and pride regain
And forgotten would be the world of ‘BABY MAMA’.
This poem is a lamentation for the lost ways of the past. The poet reminisce on how things are being done in the past and compared it to how things are done now but could not find a similarity between the past and the present.
Things have fallen apart and even the center which are the parents can not do anything to put things in place. The once cherished virginity which is a lady’s pride is now something of mockery in the modern day.
In the first and second stanzas, the poet called on everyone to think back to the past and see how things are in the past. The days where men were real and ladies of virtue existed. The poet brings to fore the joy of childhood.Unlike now that abortion is the order of the day.
The poet then brought us back to reality. He brought us back to the life we love in right now. A world where things have fallen apart.A world where what we have are broken calabashes. A world where ladies pride are thrown in the bin and a world where real men are rare to find. The poet described the world we Live in as pitiful.
The idea of the west abt having a child outside wedlock has really been imbibed by we Africans who have a different culture and values but because we want to be like the western countries of the world,we decided to neglect our belief and follow the path of the west which has only one ending, destruction.
In the last stanza, the poet raised our hope high, saying that it is not too late to go back to the past and amend our ways. The glory days can be restore if only we are ready to let go of the world of baby mama.
